Suicide behavior in China, especially rural China, would never end as cases kill themselves but would last long enough as a humiliating stigma for the family and even for the whole community. Based on our field interviews of over a thousand completed and attempted rural suicide cases, most suicide behavior could literally be avoided had there been appropriate intervention or help in time. Unfortunately, however, we could not yet do enough to save lives that should not have been ended or destroyed by such a tragic way as suicide because of extremely limited resources. We firmly believe that, in many cases, financial supports to help end or alleviate the living miseries of the family could not only help suicide survivors and their families to get through the hardships, but also could prevent suicide behavior from happening at the beginning and prevent suicide attempters from trying again, by giving them a good reason and practical support to live on.

Apart from studying academically about suicide issues of rural China, we are also actively engaged in coming up with feasible and appropriate intervention and prevention strategies. One of the many possible plans is to design a quantitative method to evaluate the living conditions of suicide victims and their families, and then to offer them with appropriate financial aids. Also, enough funding from social resources could definitely assure the effectiveness of our various research programs and explorations to suicide prevention and intervention.
